How to experience it
The drive from Leh passes through the Indus valley and climbs gradually towards the Changthang Plateau. The landscape becomes progressively starker—fewer trees, sparser vegetation. Tso Moriri sits in a high desert basin, surrounded by mountains and rarely visited by large tour groups.
At the lake, the main activity is watching water birds (bar-headed geese, terns, grebes and others) and the landscape. The water is clear and cold. Nomadic Changpa herders with yaks and sheep sometimes camp nearby. Spending a few hours here, then either returning to Leh or staying overnight at a camp, is typical.
The high altitude and wind can be punishing. Bring warm layers even in summer, and stay hydrated. The isolation here is real—you are far from medical help, so go in good health.
