Before you go
Abohar with elderly parents: what to know
- Avoid April to September; heat is intense and sanctuary villages offer almost no shade.
- Go for the sanctuary in early morning and rest at midday; late afternoon is the second good window.
- Carry water, snacks, a hat and any medicines; facilities in the villages are minimal.
- Hire a driver who knows the village tracks, as roads can be narrow and unmarked.
- For Sadqi, check the day's schedule and ID rules, and go early to find parking and a seat.
Easiest first
Places in Abohar sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Abohar Kinnow Orchard Belt (Food and restaurants · 1-2 hours) — Roadside stops involve little walking, but shade and seating can be scarce. Older visitors can enjoy the fruit and juice from the car or from a simple stall.
- Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 3-4 hours in the early morning) — There are no benches, shelters or toilets in the villages, and tracks are rough and shadeless. Most of the viewing can be done from a car, which suits older visitors, but heat and dust make long stays tiring.
- Fazilka Clock Tower (Ram Narayan Ghantaghar) (Places to visit · 20-30 minutes) — The tower can be seen from the street with no walking. Any climb involves a long staircase of 82 steps, which is not advisable for older visitors or anyone with knee or breathing problems.
- Sadqi Border Retreat Ceremony (Culture and craft · 2-3 hours including travel) — The ceremony is an outdoor event on the border road with limited facilities. Expect standing or simple seating, crowds on holidays and exposure to sun or cold; arrive early to get a seat.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Abubshahar Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day including travel) — Roads and tracks near the sanctuary are rural and facilities are not published. Expect long drives, little shade and no seating, so it is not ideal for those with limited stamina.

Practical tips for Abohar
- Heat. Summers are extreme and the monsoon is humid. Plan outings for winter mornings and avoid midday sun at all times.
- Getting around. Hire a car or taxi for the day. Public transport does not serve the sanctuary villages well.
- Local help. Ask your hotel to arrange a driver who knows the Bishnoi villages, or ask in a village about where herds were seen that morning.
- Respect the villages. The sanctuary is private farmland. Stay on tracks, do not enter fields, keep dogs away and ask before taking photographs of people.
- Fencing and roads. Wire fencing and traffic are real threats to blackbuck. Drive slowly and watch for animals near road edges.
- Food and water. Carry water and snacks. Villages have few shops, and food away from the town is limited.
- Border visit. For Sadqi, carry photo ID and check the day's timing and entry rules with the BSF or district office; schedules can change.
- Cash. Carry cash for taxis, tips and village purchases; ATMs are available in town but not in the villages.
