Why it matters
Why Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is worth your time
This is one of the great modern mosques, built to hold more than 40,000 worshippers, and it is the clearest statement of how Abu Dhabi presents itself. It was designed by Syrian architect Youssef Abdelke with a team, and it is built largely in white marble.
For Indian visitors, the arches and floral inlay may recall Indian mosques, and the mosque is welcoming to non-Muslim guests who come in respectful dress. It also explains something about the country: religion, architecture and national identity are tied together in this building, so it is worth the early start.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
The carpet and chandeliers
The prayer hall holds one of the world's largest hand-knotted carpets and seven imported chandeliers, the largest about 10 metres across.
- 02
The reflective pools
Pools along the arcades mirror the columns, and they are lit after dark in changing colours.
- 03
The courtyard mosaic
About 17,000 square metres of marble floral mosaic form the courtyard, a single large inlaid pattern.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Book your access pass online before you go, and arrive soon after the mosque opens at 9:00 am, when marble underfoot is cooler and the courtyard is less crowded. On Fridays the mosque is closed to visitors in the middle of the day, so check the schedule. Everyone should dress modestly, with shoulders, arms and legs covered, and women should expect to cover their hair. Shoes are left at the entrance.
Walk the outer arcades first, then enter the main prayer hall, where the carpet and the largest chandelier hang overhead. The complimentary 45-minute guided tour is a good use of the first half hour, because it explains the Islamic calligraphy, the floral inlay and the prayer routine without much walking. Then sit by the reflective pools and take your time.
If you want the lit version, come back in the early evening, when the pools and domes are illuminated. Keep voices low, do not point your feet at worshippers, and leave the prayer hall when prayer begins.
