How to experience it
From the Diwan-i-Khas, move south and east towards the private quarters. The Khas Mahal sits on a raised terrace overlooking the Yamuna. Red sandstone corridors lead you through smaller chambers, each designed for specific court functions. The coolness of the spaces and the faint sound of water become noticeable.
The palace has water channels running through it, part of a cooling system that circulated the Yamuna's water. In hot months, these would have made the chambers bearable. Look for where the water ran and how the architecture used it. The jali screens (latticed windows) on the eastern side allowed views of the river without being seen from the outside.
Climb to the upper levels where the marble chambers and smaller pavilions are. From the balconies you look down to the Yamuna and across to Mehtab Bagh on the opposite bank. The marble in these upper rooms is inlaid with semi-precious stones, evidence of the imperial scale even in private spaces.
