Teen Darwaza marks the boundary of Ahmed Shah's city plan, which Jai Singh later expanded and regularised into the grid of Jaipur. Ahmedabad's walled city, built from 1411, was one of the first planned cities in India with a regular grid street pattern. The three gates—Teen Darwaza (south), Delhi Gate (north) and others—controlled entry and commerce.
Surviving largely unchanged since 1411, Teen Darwaza is a connection to the city's founding moment, the moment when a king decided where a new city would be and began to build it. Seeing it gives scale and reality to the story of Ahmedabad's past.

How to experience it
Teen Darwaza stands in a bazaar that crowds around it. The triple arch is your focus: three parallel archways, each roughly 10 metres high, made of sandstone blocks with details worn by more than 600 years of weather and urban life. Walk around it if traffic allows, noting the solid construction and the style. The arch form is Mughal, but the gate predates the Mughals.
This was the south gate of Ahmed Shah's walled city. Today, shops and a busy market occupy the space. The gate survives not as a quiet monument but as part of living bazaar geography.
