Why it matters
Why Hmuifang is worth your time
Hmuifang matters because it gives a taste of Mizoram's forest cover close to the capital. The mountain stands at about 1,619 metres and is the source of the Tuirial River. The forest has been reserved since the era of the Mizo chiefs.
It is also the site of a government tourist resort built on land once governed by Chief Lallianvunga. For visitors, it is a cool, quiet alternative to the city, and a convenient base for walking.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan an early start. The drive takes you through forested hill country, and the road climbs steadily. At the top, the resort and surrounding forest are the draw: the mountain is covered with forest long protected under chiefly rule. Walk the nearby trails at an easy pace; the air is noticeably cooler than in Aizawl.
The Thalfavang Kut festival, organised by the state tourism department, features traditional dances. If your dates coincide, check with tourism officials, but do not plan around it without confirming.
Eat at the resort or carry food, and leave in time to be back on the road before dusk.
