The short answer

Best areas to stay in Ajmer

  1. 01

Near the Dargah (old city lanes)

Best for: Pilgrims and those who want to be in the spiritual heart of the city

Unbeatable for atmosphere and early-morning access to the shrine. Lodging ranges from simple dharamshalas to small heritage hotels. Cobbled lanes are narrow and atmospheric but can be noisy; vehicles cannot always reach the door. Lifts are rare, so check accessibility carefully for older travellers.

  2. 02

Ana Sagar Lake embankment (main road)

Best for: Those who want a calmer, more modern base with views

Hotels and guesthouses along the lake promenade offer quieter, fresher air and a view. About 10–15 minutes by car or auto to the Dargah. Good restaurants and cafés nearby. A comfortable, practical option for families and seniors.

  3. 03

Nizam Gate and Maheshwar Gate areas

Best for: Travellers who want to be near the Dargah but slightly removed from the densest lanes

A middle ground: still within walking distance of the shrine, but quieter than the immediate Dargah area. Some good mid-range hotels and restaurants. Better for car access than the old-city heart.

  4. 04

Prithviraj Marg and modern shopping areas

Best for: Convenience and modern amenities

The newer part of town with chain hotels, restaurants and shops. Less atmospheric than the old city or lake areas, but quieter and easier for seniors with accessibility needs. About 20–25 minutes by car to the Dargah.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Ajmer

  • Visit the Dargah early (before 9 am) to avoid crowds and the heat. Remove your shoes; use footwear-storage services and allow time.
  • The Dargah and old-city bazaars have cobbled, uneven floors. Wear slip-on shoes and consider a walking stick for navigation.
  • Hire a car and driver for Taragarh Fort and the Jain temples. Walking up from the base is steep; vehicles reduce the climb.
  • The Ana Sagar Lake embankment is level and pleasant for evening walks; avoid the midday heat. Walk in early morning or late afternoon.
