Plan 01
1 day in Aligarh
- 01
Day 1: Fort, campus and old city
Start at Aligarh Fort in the morning, while it is cool, and walk the outer ditch and ramparts if access allows. Continue to the university campus for Victoria Gate, Strachey Hall and the older halls. Stop at Sir Syed House and, if you have arranged it, the Maulana Azad Library. Break for lunch and a rest, then visit the Jama Masjid in the Upper Fort area in the late afternoon, outside prayer times.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Aligarh Fort 45 minutes to 1 hour Moderate Winter mornings, October to March, when the ditch and ramparts are comfortable to walk Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Aligarh Fort: Paths around the ramparts and the ditch are uneven and there is little shade or seating. Older visitors can enjoy the outer walls and the approach without descending into the ravines.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Aligarh trip for parents and children
- Use a car or autorickshaw between the fort, campus and Upper Fort; the distances are modest but the heat and traffic are tiring.
- Visit the fort and campus in the morning and rest after lunch.
- The campus is level and shaded, which makes it the easiest sight for older visitors.
- Old-city lanes near the Jama Masjid are narrow and busy; go with a companion.
- Dress modestly for mosques and the campus; carry a head covering and a scarf.
- Carry water, any regular medicines and a photo ID for campus entry.
