Why it matters
Why Maulana Azad Library, AMU is worth your time
A university library tells you what a university values. This one began in 1877 as the Lytton Library, named for the then Viceroy, when the founding college was still young. Its collections of Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Sanskrit-related manuscripts show how closely the Aligarh project tied modern education to the study of older learning.
The library also preserves the personal book collection of the poet Kaifi Azmi, a donation of around 5,000 books. For a visitor with an interest in books or Urdu literature, it is one of the main reasons to include the campus.

How to experience it
Approach the library as a landmark on a campus walk. The building stands in about 4.75 acres of lawns and gardens, with a seven-storey block and large reading halls that seat around 2,000 students at a time. It was opened in its present form by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1960 and renamed for Maulana Azad, India's first Education Minister.
If you can arrange access through the university, the manuscripts are the draw. The library holds more than 15,000 rare manuscripts, Mughal farmans, Mughal paintings and an early printed 1572 Latin edition of Ibn al-Haytham's Book of Optics. These are conservation-sensitive items and are not displayed like a museum, so a visit is by arrangement.
Plan the library as part of a half day on campus with Victoria Gate, Strachey Hall and Sir Syed House. Keep expectations modest on a first visit and treat anything beyond the exterior as a bonus.
