Plan 01

1 day in Almora

  1. 01

Day 1: Temples, bazaar and sunset

Start at the Nanda Devi temple in the town centre, then walk through Lala Bazar for bal mithai and a look at the old shopfronts. Visit the Govind Ballabh Pant museum on Mall Road if you want a sheltered hour. After lunch, take a taxi to Kasar Devi for the ridge, or to Katarmal if you prefer history. Finish at Bright End Corner for sunset if the sky is clear.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Nanda Devi Temple45 minutes to 1 hourEasyMorning for a quiet visit; early September when the annual Nanda Devi fair is held
Lala Bazar1 hourModerateMorning or late afternoon; avoid peak midday crowds
Govind Ballabh Pant MuseumAbout 1 hourEasyAny season; useful on rainy or hot afternoons
Bright End Corner1 hourEasySunrise or sunset; March to June and September to November

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Lala Bazar: The lane is narrow, busy with pedestrians and two-wheelers, and the paving is uneven in places. Gradients are steady, and seating is limited. Walk slowly and take a break at a sweet shop.

Plan 02

2 days in Almora

    Day 1: The old town

Begin with the Nanda Devi temple, walk through Lala Bazar for bal mithai, and look for the Tamta workshops in the old town. Add the museum on Mall Road. In the late afternoon take a taxi to Bright End Corner for sunset and a quiet end to the day.

    Day 2: Jageshwar valley

Leave early for Jageshwar, about 36 km away. Walk the main temple cluster and visit the ASI museum, then continue to the Dandeshwar group. Stop at the Chitai Golu Devta temple on the way back if time allows, and return before dark.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 03

3 days in Almora

  1. 01

    Day 1: The old town

Nanda Devi temple in the morning, Lala Bazar and bal mithai, then the museum. In the afternoon look for the Tamta workshops, and end at Bright End Corner for sunset.

  2. 02

Day 2: Ridge and sun temple

Drive to Kasar Devi in the morning for the ridge and views, then continue to Katarmal Sun Temple for the ninth-century stonework. Take a long lunch and rest in the afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Katarmal Sun Temple2-3 hours including the driveModerateMorning light; clear months from October to April; avoid the monsoon

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Katarmal Sun Temple: The temple stands on a hillside, so reaching it involves a climb on steps and uneven paths after the road ends. There are few places to sit and no shade at the main shrine, so this suits steady walkers; others can ask the driver how close vehicles get before deciding.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Jageshwar and Binsar

Make an early start for Jageshwar, then Binsar if energy allows, or return via the Chitai Golu Devta temple. Add Lakhudiyar's rock paintings if you like prehistoric art and have time to spare.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Almora trip for parents and children

  • Almora is steep. Choose a hotel with vehicle access close to the door and ask about steps before you book.
  • Plan one main outing per day and rest in the afternoon. Hill roads are winding, so carry water and motion-sickness remedies if needed.
  • Katarmal Sun Temple and Lakhudiyar involve a final walk on uneven ground. Ask your driver how far vehicles go before deciding.
  • Bright End Corner, the Nanda Devi temple and the museum are the easiest sights. Jageshwar's main cluster is manageable on paved paths.
  • Carry warm layers year-round, and a rain jacket from June to September. Avoid the monsoon months if possible because of landslides and cloud.
  • Check current road conditions before any long trip, especially after heavy rain.
