1 day in Amaravati

   Day 1: Stupa, museum and a riverside walk

   Drive early to Amaravathi village (about 45 minutes) to visit the Amaravati Stupa and Archaeological Museum while it is cool. Spend 2–3 hours exploring the ruined stupa, with its Satavahana-era reliefs, and the museum's collection of sculptures and terracotta pieces. Stop for lunch in Guntur or on the way back. In the late afternoon, walk along Punnami Ghat in Vijayawada or rest at your hotel and visit a nearby temple such as Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple at dusk, when the light is soft and the day has cooled.

2 days in Amaravati

1. 01

   Day 1: The Stupa and ancient art

   Drive out early to Amaravathi village and the Amaravati Stupa site. Spend the morning and early afternoon at the stupa and museum, then return by late afternoon. Rest for an hour. In the evening, visit Lakshmi Narasimha Temple in Mangalagiri (roughly 20 minutes away) or Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple, both set on hillsides with good evening light and less crowded than midday. Follow with a simple dinner in Mangalagiri market or near your hotel.

   Day 2: Caves and riverside

   Drive to Undavalli Caves (roughly 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic). Spend 2–3 hours exploring the four-storey rock-cut temple and the reclining Buddha sculpture. Return and stop at Prakasam Barrage en route for photographs and to see the dam across the Krishna River. If energy allows, visit Krishnaveni Mandapam (a small river museum) near the barrage. End with an evening walk along Punnami Ghat in Vijayawada or a riverside meal.

3 days in Amaravati

1. 01

   Day 1: Stupa and museum

   Drive to Amaravathi village early and spend the morning at the Amaravati Stupa and Archaeological Museum. Explore the ruined stupa's northern and eastern sections, which have some surviving railings and drum slabs with Jataka-tale reliefs. Return by midday, rest, and in the evening visit a temple such as Lakshmi Narasimha in Mangalagiri or Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple.

   Day 2: Undavalli and the Barrage

   Drive to Undavalli Caves and spend 2–3 hours exploring the multilevel rock-cut temple with the impressive reclining Buddha. Stop for lunch near the caves or on the way back. In the afternoon, visit Prakasam Barrage to see the 1,223-metre dam across the Krishna, then Krishnaveni Mandapam. If time allows, walk around Rajiv Gandhi Park in Vijayawada or sit by the river at a ghat.

   Day 3: Temples and villages

   Visit Akkanna Madanna Caves near Vijayawada's Indrakeeladri Hills (about 45 minutes away), with their 7th-century rock-cut chambers. Then visit Kanaka Durga Temple on the Indrakeeladri hill for the view across the Krishna and Vijayawada. Stop at Moghalrajapuram Caves if interested in more rock-cut temple architecture. Return to Amaravati in late afternoon, and spend the evening exploring local markets or a quiet area like Velagapudi government complex if it is open to public visits.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

• Book your car and driver for the entire day. Driving yourself in traffic is stressful; a hired car lets you rest between sights and avoids the heat of waiting for transport.
• Plan one major day trip per day: the Stupa and Museum on one day, the caves on another. Do not attempt both in one day.
• Undavalli Caves and the Amaravati Stupa both involve climbing and uneven ground. Ask your driver to help, use handrails where available, and carry water and a hat. Stop halfway if needed.
• Afternoons from 1pm to 4pm are very hot, even in winter. Rest at your hotel or a cool cafe during these hours. Start sightseeing early and return to activity after 4pm.
• Many temples require you to remove footwear on hot stone floors. Wear socks and carry water-resistant sandals that slip off easily. Marble temple floors can cause burns on bare feet in midday sun.
• Hospitals and pharmacies are concentrated in Vijayawada and Guntur. Know the location of the nearest medical facility to your hotel. Ask your hotel to keep a list of pharmacies and doctors.
