History and context
The story behind Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib
Per the AllAboutSikhs account, Guru Tegh Bahadur was martyred on 11 November 1675 and the cremation of his head took place on 17 November. Guru Gobind Singh visited the shrine as he left Anandpur Sahib on the night of 5-6 December 1705 and entrusted its care to Bhai Gurbakhsh Das Udasi. The monument was renovated and enlarged in the early 1970s under Baba Seva Singh.

Why it matters
Why Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib is worth your time
Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed in 1675, and his head was brought to Chakk Nanaki, now Anandpur Sahib, by Bhai Jaita and his companions. It was cremated here, and Guru Gobind Singh raised a memorial platform over the ashes in a small room. The shrine's central pedestal is believed to be the oldest structure in Anandpur Sahib.
It matters because the event shaped the next phase of Sikh history. Guru Gobind Singh's response, and the Khalsa that followed in 1699, started from here. Do not confuse this shrine with the Sis Ganj gurdwara in Delhi, which marks the execution site.

How to experience it
Walk or drive from Kesgarh through the old bazaar. Leave your shoes at the entrance and enter across the front compound, which has the original pavement of old Nanakshahi bricks in geometric patterns. The main building is two storeys with a pinnacled dome, and a wide covered passage supported by marble columns runs around the inner sanctum.
Inside, the memorial platform marks the place where the Guru's head was cremated. Sit quietly, listen to the kirtan and follow the sangat. Outlook Traveller notes that a raised platform in the complex is where Guru Gobind Singh gave the funeral address.
Combine this with Bhora Sahib and Damdama Sahib, which stand close by in the old-town area, so you can see all three in a single easy morning.
