The short answer

Hola Mohalla: what visitors should know first

Go if you want the festival and can handle enormous crowds. Book rooms months ahead, expect road closures and long walks, and avoid it entirely if you travel with elderly parents who need quiet or easy access.

History and context

The story behind Hola Mohalla

The Wikipedia article says Hola Mohalla is a three-day festival, set by Guru Gobind Singh one day after Holi. Sources differ on whether the first gathering was in 1701. In 1889 the colonial government approved it as an official public holiday. It is now the biggest festival at Anandpur Sahib.

Why it matters

Why Hola Mohalla is worth your time

Hola Mohalla was introduced by Guru Gobind Singh, with sources placing the first gathering at Anandpur in 1701. It builds on Holi by adding a martial dimension: the name combines halla, a military charge, with mohalla, an organised column. The festival is a living tradition of Sikh martial arts, and for many Sikhs it is the central annual event at Anandpur Sahib.

For travellers, it is a spectacle of devotion and culture rather than a quiet pilgrimage. Come prepared for crowds, and treat it as a festival to witness with respect.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Hola Mohalla runs for three days around Holi and draws pilgrims from across India. The main events include mock battles, displays of martial skill, kirtan and poetry, and a long closing procession that moves from Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib towards Holgarh and the Charan Ganga. Nihang Singhs, recognisable by blue robes and decorated turbans, are prominent, with tent-pegging and horse displays.

Plan your day around the events. Arrive early, walk in as vehicles are restricted and find a spot with some shade and a clear view. Langar is served all day in large dining halls, with long queues at peak times.

If you are travelling with older parents, consider visiting Anandpur Sahib at another time of year instead, or watch from a fixed viewpoint rather than moving through the crowd. Keep valuables safe, carry water and stay close to your group.
