The short answer
Kiratpur Sahib: what visitors should know first
A good half-day addition by car. Visit Patalpuri Sahib on the river and one or two other gurdwaras; go outside peak days as it can be crowded.
History and context
The story behind Kiratpur Sahib
Wikipedia says Guru Hargobind founded Kiratpur Sahib, giving 1627 or 1634 for the founding. Guru Har Rai and Guru Har Krishan were born there, and the town served as the Sikh community's base for a time. Gurdwara Babangarh Sahib marks the spot where Guru Tegh Bahadur's head was first rested in 1675.

Why it matters
Why Kiratpur Sahib is worth your time
Kiratpur Sahib was founded by Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru, and was home to the next two Gurus, Guru Har Rai and Guru Har Krishan. It is a sacred place for Sikhs, with a number of gurdwaras within and around the town. Guru Tegh Bahadur moved the community to Anandpur Sahib in 1664.
On a visit you see the earlier layer of Sikh history that precedes Anandpur Sahib, and the river setting is calm in a way the larger town is not. Visiting it also shows how the Sikh community moved from the Sutlej plain towards the hills over a few generations.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive from Anandpur Sahib; the road takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. Start at Gurdwara Patalpuri Sahib, beside the Sutlej and the railway line, where many Sikhs immerse the ashes of their dead. Visit during the morning, when it is quieter.
Then choose among the other gurdwaras. Baba Gurditta stands on a hill about 1 km from the town, Shish Mahal marks the site of the town's first building, and Babangarh Sahib commemorates the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur's head was rested. There is also the dargah of Baba Budhan Shah.
Select two or three rather than all of them; one is enough for older visitors. Combine with a langar meal and rest before returning to Anandpur Sahib.
Plan with confidence
