Why it matters

Why Mihintale is worth your time

Mihintale is where Sri Lanka's Buddhist story begins. According to tradition, Mahinda, a monk sent from India, met the king here and started Buddhism's presence on the island. For many Sri Lankans, the hill is as important as the Bodhi tree.

For Indian visitors, the story links two countries, since Mahinda is traditionally said to have come from India. The hill's ruins also show an organised monastic settlement, with a hospital, inscriptions and a staircase built for crowds of pilgrims. Visiting at Poson, in June, offers a rare glimpse of mass pilgrimage, but you should be ready for heavy crowds.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start at the foot of the hill, where the ruins of an ancient hospital lie. Then begin the climb up the granite staircase. Take it slowly, pausing at landings for water. Halfway up, you reach terraces and shrines, among them the Kantaka Cetiya, a circular stupa with four decorated entrances.

Near the summit, the small Ambasthala dagoba is said to hold relics of Mahinda and marks the place where he met the king. Beyond it, Aradhana Gala is a rock where Mahinda is said to have landed, and railings help visitors climb it. The view over the plain towards Anuradhapura is the reward for the climb.

Go early, because the stone gets hot very quickly. Wear thin socks if permitted, carry water and a hat, and keep the descent in mind. If the steps are too much, enjoy the lower area and hospital ruins, then rest at the foot. Combine the trip with a stop at Isurumuniya or the museum on return.
