Plan 01
1 day in Araku
- 01
Day 1: Caves, coffee and a museum stop
Start as early as you can from the coast, ideally on the morning Vistadome train or a pre-dawn drive. Go straight to Borra Caves while the crowds are small, then head up to Araku town. Have lunch, visit the Tribal Museum and the Coffee Museum, which stand close together, and finish at Padmapuram Gardens if time allows. Leave early enough to cross the ghat road before dark; the return is slower than the outward leg.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Borra Caves 1 to 1.5 hours inside; half a day including the journey Moderate Early morning on a weekday; October to February for comfortable weather Padmapuram Gardens 1.5 to 2 hours Easy Morning or late afternoon; October to February Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Borra Caves: The route inside has steps, slopes and wet, uneven floors, and the lighting is dim in places. Older travellers should go slowly, wear grip shoes, use handrails where provided and consider a guide. The passage can be crowded and stuffy on weekends.

Day 2: Viewpoints and waterfalls
Be at Madagada or Galikonda for the early light, then take breakfast at the hotel. Visit Chaparai on the road towards Paderu in the late morning. Katiki Waterfalls suits those with energy and decent footwear; others can stay at Araku Pinery or in the coffee estates before the afternoon return.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Araku Valley trip for parents and children
- Break the journey with a night in Araku; the ghat road and the long return can tire older travellers more than the sightseeing does.
- Borra Caves involve steps and slippery, uneven floors; go slowly, wear shoes with grip and take a guide for the steepest sections.
- Prefer the Tribal Museum, Coffee Museum, Padmapuram Gardens and Galikonda viewpoint over the waterfall treks, which need decent footwear and balance.
- If you take the Vistadome train, book ahead; reserved seats are far more comfortable than standing in the passes.
- Carry water, snacks and any medication; there are few pharmacies between the sights, and mobile signal is patchy on the hill roads.
- Check road conditions in the monsoon; landslides and mist can make the ghat sections slow.
