The short answer
Vankhandeshwar Mahadev Temple: what visitors should know first
A worthwhile, easy stop in Bhind. Go on a weekday morning for calm, or Monday evening for the Maha Aarti; dress modestly and remove shoes.
History and context
The story behind Vankhandeshwar Mahadev Temple
Wikipedia credits the Bhadawar ruler Badan Singh Devju Bhadauria with building the temple in 1652, after the Gauri Taal was made. A popular tradition names Prithviraj Chauhan as founder, but contemporary and inscriptional evidence for that is lacking, so the Bhadauria date is the safer one.

Why it matters
Why Vankhandeshwar Mahadev Temple is worth your time
This temple is the main religious landmark of Bhind and gives context to the Bhadauria region around Ater. It shows the same dynasty that built the fort as patrons of public religion and works, since the temple is linked to the lake constructed under their rule.
It is also a living place of worship, which balances the ruins at Ater and the wildlife of the river. Seeing it helps visitors understand that the region is not only forts and ravines.

How to experience it
Vankhandeshwar Mahadev is Bhind's best-known temple and an easy stop on the way to or from Ater. It stands on the bank of Gauri Lake, surrounded by ghats, and houses a Shivalinga that devotees regard as self-manifested. Smaller shrines to Ram, Lakshman, Sita and Ganesh stand within the complex, along with an old peepal tree.
A Maha Aarti is held every Monday and draws worshippers from a wide area, while Mahashivratri brings very large crowds. If you want a quiet visit, go on another day in the morning. Remove shoes at the entrance, dress modestly and follow the flow of worshippers.
Sit on the lake edge for a few minutes after your visit; the ghats are the calmest part of the complex and give a sense of Bhind life away from the road.
