How to experience it
From Auli Base, ascend the meadow trail toward Auli Top. Instead of continuing to the cable car, fork south-east toward the lake. The path is used by trekkers and shepherds, so it is usually clear, but loose scree makes it slippery. Allow 45 minutes to an hour to reach the lake.
Once there, sit by the shore and refill water bottles if you have purification tablets. The lake is glacially fed, so the water is cold and clear. In late May and June, yak herds sometimes graze nearby. If you see herds, stay calm and give them space. Return the same way, which takes about 45 minutes downhill.
