The short answer
Best areas to stay in Auli
- 01
Auli plateau (lodges and resorts)
Best for: Visitors seeking immersion in high-altitude life and easy access to trekking
A few basic to mid-range lodges and a ski resort sit on the plateau. Accommodation is simple and often full in peak seasons. The advantage is immediate access to views and walks; the trade-off is altitude exposure, limited facilities, and basic meals. Ensure your lodge has altitude-aware staff and a way to reach medical care.
- 02
Joshimath (valley town)
Best for: A more comfortable base with better food and services, for staged acclimatisation
Small towns and villages in the valley offer guesthouses and basic hotels. Joshimath is the main hub, about 20–30 km below Auli. From here, you can make day trips to Auli via ropeway or local transport. Better for acclimatisation and those who prefer not to sleep at altitude.
- 03
Rishikesh or Dehradun
Best for: Lowland base for acclimatisation before a trip to Auli, or a rest day on the return
Both cities are 4–6 hours below Auli and have good hotels and restaurants. Come here first to acclimatise, then drive up to Auli over 2–3 days. This staged approach reduces altitude sickness risk.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Auli
- Consult a doctor before travelling to altitude above 2,500 metres. Discuss altitude sickness, heart conditions, and blood pressure concerns.
- Ascend slowly: consider a night in Joshimath before ascending to Auli. Allow a full day at altitude before strenuous activity.
- The ropeway ascent itself is comfortable and safe, but the plateau air is thin. Walk slowly, rest often, and carry water.
- The road to Joshimath is steep and winding; if you have inner ear problems or motion sickness, take medication before departure.
