History and context
The story behind Parvati Arga Wildlife Sanctuary
The lakes are oxbows, left behind when the Saryu River shifted its course. The area was declared a sanctuary, with Wikipedia giving 23 May 1990 and the UP ecotourism board giving 1997 as the notification year. It was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance on 2 December 2019, site number 2416.
The sanctuary sits within the Tikri forest area and is managed by the UP Forest Department.

Why it matters
Why Parvati Arga Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Ayodhya trips revolve around temples, ghats and queues, so Parvati Arga offers a very different half-day: open water, reeds and birds. The sanctuary covers roughly 11 sq km and was declared in 1990 according to Wikipedia, while the state ecotourism board lists 1997, so dates vary between sources. It became Uttar Pradesh's Ramsar-listed wetland in December 2019.
For travellers who want to see the plains wetlands that surround the pilgrimage towns, this is one of the more rewarding stops. It is a working wetland rather than a managed park, so expect basic facilities and let the birds set the pace. It is also a good outing for families who need to break a long temple itinerary.

How to experience it
Hire a car and driver for the day from Ayodhya and leave around dawn. Published distances differ, from about 25 km in some accounts to about 70 km in a state ecotourism itinerary, so ask your driver to confirm the route and the road conditions before you start. The sanctuary lies on the Mankapur-Nawabganj road; Mankapur and Tikari railway stations are the nearest railheads.
The two lakes, Parvati Tal and Arga Tal, are crescent-shaped oxbows left behind when the Saryu changed course, and they sit about 1.5 km apart. Spend the first hours on the lake edges with binoculars. In winter, tens of thousands of waterfowl arrive, including greylag goose, northern pintail and mallard, while resident birds include purple swamphen. Water lilies and lotus cover much of the open water.
The habitat also suits sarus crane, vultures roost in the surrounding forest, and jackal and nilgai live in the area. Bring lunch, because there are no confirmed food stalls. Aim to leave by mid-afternoon so you are back on the main road before dark.
