Why it matters
Why Almatti Dam is worth your time
Almatti is the dam that changed the map of this district. The reservoir, filled from the Krishna, submerged large parts of Bagalkot district, including villages and farmland, and many families were resettled. The old fort town of Bagalkot itself is among the places affected.
It is also a working power station, with a 290 MW powerhouse run by the Karnataka Power Corporation, and a major source of irrigation water across North Karnataka. Seeing it helps explain why much of the area looks different from older maps.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Reach the dam in the afternoon, when the heat eases, and begin with the viewpoints on the upstream side where the Krishna spreads into a broad reservoir. The dam is 1,565 m long and 49.3 m high, finished in July 2005 after work began in 1997, and the powerhouse on the right bank holds six generating units for a total of 290 MW.
Gardens at the foot of the dam are the usual visitor attraction. Walk through them slowly, and look at the downstream view of the spillway if the gates are open. Tourism listings mention boating and a musical fountain rock garden; confirm what is operating before you plan around them.
The dam lies on the edge of two districts, so approach roads vary. Combine it with Kudalasangama, about 15 km away, or the Yadahalli sanctuary for a full day outing from Bagalkot.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
