Why it matters

Why Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is worth your time

Kandariya Mahadeva was built in the Chandela period, during the reign of Vidyadhara (around 1003 to 1035), and is dedicated to Shiva. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of Chandela temple architecture.

It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1986 as part of the Khajuraho Group of Monuments, and is the monument most visitors to this part of Madhya Pradesh travel to see. Standing in front of it, you can see why the Chandela builders put so much work into the carving and the tower, and why it repays a slow, unhurried visit.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk the pathway slowly, looking at the exterior first. The temple is about 31 m long and 20 m wide, on a 4 m plinth, and its main tower rises 31 m. The exterior carries sculpture in three horizontal bands, with 84 miniature spires around the central tower.

Inside there are three halls rising in height towards the sanctum. If you wish to climb the platform steps, go slowly; otherwise look from below to see the full composition. A short guided explanation can help, since the temple is dense with figures.

If you are combining this with Bageshwar Dham, do it the day before or after, not the same day, since the drive to the dham is long and tiring.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.
