Why it matters

Why Sunderdhunga Glacier Trek is worth your time

Sunderdhunga is the wild third valley of the Pindari group. It sees a fraction of the traffic of Pindari and runs up towards the outer wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, with close views of Maiktoli and its neighbours.

For experienced trekkers it is a chance to walk a Kumaon valley in something close to its traditional state, with shepherds' camps rather than lodges. That remoteness also makes it more serious: rescue is slow and the weather changes quickly, so it rewards careful planning and a strong local team.

The main upper camp, surrounded by steep walls and glacier-fed streams.

  3. 03

    Maiktoli

The snow peak that dominates the head of the valley.

How to experience it

The trek shares the Pindari approach as far as Khati, at about 2,200 m. From there it turns west up the Sunderdhunga river to Jatoli, at about 2,450 m (8,036 ft), with simple guesthouses or camping. The next day is long and steep, about 13 km to Kathaliya, at about 3,250 m (10,660 ft), which is the main camp for the upper valley.

From Kathaliya, groups make day climbs: one towards Maiktoli Top, given by operators as about 3,850 m (12,628 ft), with the snow face of Maiktoli above, and another to the Sukhram cave area and the Sunderdhunga viewpoint at about 4,000 m (13,200 ft). Figures vary between operators, so confirm the high point with yours.

The return is by the same route to Khati. Most itineraries take seven to eight days from Bageshwar. Avoid the monsoon, when stream crossings and landslides are dangerous, and the winter, when snow makes the upper valley very difficult.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go only with an experienced local guide
  • Carry trekking poles for loose, steep ground
  • Avoid the monsoon because of stream crossings
  • Plan a spare day for weather
  • Carry all waste back down
