The short answer
Dhar Fort (day trip): what visitors should know first
A good short stop if you are already driving through Dhar. See the walls, the cistern and the open-air sculpture display, and allow an hour; it is not worth a special trip from Bagh alone.
History and context
The story behind Dhar Fort (day trip)
The fort is thought to have been built by Muhammad bin Tughluq, with a gateway added in 1684-85 in the reign of Alamgir. Dhar later fell to the Marathas in 1730 and became part of the princely Dhar State after 1818.

Why it matters
Why Dhar Fort (day trip) is worth your time
Dhar was the seat of the Paramara chiefs of Malwa and a famous centre of learning under King Bhoja. The fort, though later, anchors the town's story and gives a sense of the political changes that followed, from the Delhi Sultanate to the Marathas.
For visitors from Bagh it is a useful midpoint. You can see Buddhist art at Bagh, medieval fortification at Dhar and sultanate palaces at Mandu within a single loop through Dhar district.

How to experience it
Make Dhar a lunch-and-stretch stop on the road between Bagh and Indore. The fort rests on a small hill and is built from sandstone. Walk the outer walls and gateways first, one of which was added in the late seventeenth century, then go in to see the deep rock-cut cistern.
Inside, look for the palace with its Mughal-era pillared porch and the open-air display of temple fragments, which hints at the area's earlier history. Climb to a wall for a view over the city.
Dhar has other monuments, including the Bhojshala complex and the Lat Masjid with its iron pillar fragments, but these are detailed in the Dhar guide and are best seen with a local. Carry water and keep expectations modest.
