Ballari, formerly Bellary and renamed on 1 November 2014, sits at about 485 metres on a flat plain of black cotton soil, ringed by granite hills such as Ballari Gudda and Kumbara Gudda. The 2011 census counted 410,445 people. It was part of the Madras Presidency until 1956 and today is known for steel, with the district nicknamed the steel city of South India, and for a long garment tradition that includes denim.
Tourists rarely linger, which is part of the appeal. Bellary Fort is the one dependable sight: a two-part hill fort with an Upper Fort built by Hanumappa Nayaka, a Vijayanagara feudatory, and a Lower Fort added in the late 18th century under Haider Ali. A Hanuman temple stands outside the east gate.
Beyond the city, the district rewards the curious. Sanganakallu and Kupgal, about 7 km away, preserve Neolithic ash mounds. Daroji, Asia's first sloth bear sanctuary, lies about 50 km away and about 15 km from Hampi, while Gudekote Sloth Bear Sanctuary is about 54 km out. The city also serves as a practical base for onward travel to Hampi.
The climate is hot and semi-arid, in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats. Plan outdoor sights for mornings between November and February, and keep expectations for services modest.
