The short answer
Lumphini Park: what visitors should know first
Yes, as a gentle early morning or late afternoon break. It is level, free and easy to reach by MRT, and it fills with walkers and exercise groups. It is not a sight to cross town for.
History and context
The story behind Lumphini Park
The park was created in 1925 on land owned by King Rama VI, who donated it to the nation as a fairground. It covers about 360 rai, or roughly 57 hectares, and a statue of the king was built in 1942.

Why it matters
Why Lumphini Park is worth your time
Lumphini Park is a rare large green space in a dense city, and it shows how Bangkok residents use public space: before sunrise and after sunset, when the temperature drops. The park offers a useful pause in an itinerary heavy with temples and shopping, and it is a good place for older family members to rest.
The park also has history. King Rama VI donated the land to the nation in 1925 as a fairground, and it later became a public park. It is a reminder that central Bangkok was once much more open and that the city still depends on a few remaining green lungs.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Enter from the MRT Lumphini or Silom side and walk to the lake. The best time is early morning, around sunrise, when the heat is low and people walk, jog and practise tai chi and group exercises. In the evening, the paths fill again once the sun is lower.
The park is home to hundreds of Asian water monitors, large lizards that swim in the lake and rest on the banks. They are harmless if left alone but should not be fed or touched. You can hire swan-shaped paddle boats on the lake for a short ride; check the price at the boat stand.
A jogging path of about 2.5 km circles the park, and the statue of King Rama VI marks the main entrance. Combine a visit with the Silom area, where the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and many Indian restaurants are close by, or end the day with dinner in Silom.
Plan with confidence
