The short answer

Thipsamai Pad Thai: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you want to taste pad thai from a name Bangkokians have queued for over decades. Go for an early dinner or use a mall branch for a calmer sit-down, and confirm the hours first because sources disagree on them.

History and context

The story behind Thipsamai Pad Thai

Wikipedia says Samai Baisamut began by selling pad thai with her mother from a boat on the Phasi Charoen Canal, started a street stall in the 1950s and opened a shophouse restaurant in 1966. The restaurant's own site dates the business to 1939 and says the name changed to Thipsamai in 1966, so the founding year differs between sources.

The restaurant has been run by the Baisamut family, and Wikipedia lists branches at ICONSIAM, Siam Paragon and Phutthamonthon Sai 4 alongside the Maha Chai Road original.

Why it matters

Why Thipsamai Pad Thai is worth your time

Pad thai is often described as Thailand's national noodle dish, and Thipsamai is one of the restaurants most closely tied to it. The restaurant's site links its origins to the period when pad thai was promoted under Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram, and says customers once called it Padthai Pratoopee after the nearby Pratoopee intersection.

For a first-time visitor, a meal here shows how a street dish became a sit-down institution while keeping a short, focused menu. Its mall branches also make it one of the more practical traditional names for families who cannot manage a long queue on a hot pavement.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Thipsamai's own site lists a menu built around pad thai: a basic version, a vegetarian version, one cooked with shrimp oil and egg, and its Superb Padthai, which adds fresh deep-sea prawns and is wrapped in egg. Wikipedia notes the noodles are sun-dried sen chan noodles from Chanthaburi and that the kitchen makes its own prawn oil. If you want to see how the dish is meant to taste, the Superb version is the one the restaurant itself points to.

Wikipedia also lists pork satay and fresh orange juice as part of the meal, and the orange juice is a good cooling pairing for the stir-fried noodles. Tell the staff clearly if anyone at the table avoids pork, prawns or egg, because the standard preparations use prawn oil, and ask whether the vegetarian pad thai is cooked without fish sauce and shrimp oil before a strict vegetarian orders it.

The main branch sits in the old quarter near the Giant Swing and Wat Suthat, so it pairs with a morning of temples. If the pavement queue looks too long, the mall branches on the site's list are an easier option for the same menu.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Check hours before going, as sources differ
  • Tell staff about pork, prawn or egg avoidance
  • Ask how the vegetarian pad thai is seasoned
  • Use a mall branch if the queue is long
