The short answer

Wat Traimit (Golden Buddha): what visitors should know first

Yes, if you are already in Chinatown. The Golden Buddha is quick to see and a good contrast to the busy street. Plan 45 minutes, and combine it with Yaowarat.

History and context

The story behind Wat Traimit (Golden Buddha)

The statue was moved to the temple from Wat Phraya Krai in 1935. In 1955, it was dropped and the plaster cracked, revealing solid gold. It is now housed in the four-storey Phra Maha Mondop, completed in 2007 and opened to the public in 2010.

Why it matters

Why Wat Traimit (Golden Buddha) is worth your time

The Golden Buddha at Wat Traimit is a rare case of a hidden treasure revealed by accident. The statue was covered in plaster, probably for protection, and its gold went unnoticed for centuries until it was dropped in 1955 and the plaster cracked. It had been moved to the temple from the abandoned Wat Phraya Krai in 1935.

The temple also ties neatly to Chinatown. The Heritage Center in the same building tells the story of Chinese migrants in Bangkok, so one stop covers both a sacred object and local history.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Take the MRT to Hua Lamphong or a taxi to the temple and head to the Phra Maha Mondop. The Golden Buddha sits on the top floor, and you remove your shoes before entering. The image is a seated Buddha in Sukhothai style, and it was made of solid gold under a plaster covering.

On the floors below, an exhibition explains how the statue was discovered, and the Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Center covers the history of the Chinese community in Bangkok. These are useful for older visitors, since they are indoors, air-conditioned and seated.

After the visit, walk west along Yaowarat Road or take a taxi to the evening food scene. The temple also fits a morning plan with the Grand Palace by river boat, followed by Chinatown for lunch. Dress modestly and be quiet inside the image hall.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Combine with Yaowarat Road to save travel time
  • Cover shoulders and knees
  • Check the entry fee for the statue and the heritage centre
  • Visit in the morning before the street gets busy
