Bardhaman, also spelt Burdwan, sits on the northern bank of the Damodar River, a little under 100 km from Kolkata. For centuries it was the seat of the Bardhaman Raj, founded in 1657, one of the leading landed houses of lower Bengal, and its patronage left temples, gardens and ceremonial architecture across the district.
The town works well as a day trip or a one-night stop. Sarbamangala Temple, the nine-spired shrine of the town's presiding goddess, anchors the old quarter. The 108 Shiva Temples at Nawabhat, the Curzon Gate on the Grand Trunk Road and the tombs of Sher Afghan and Qutbuddin Koka fill out a heritage morning, and Ramnabagan, a small sal and teak deer park, adds a gentler stop on the western side near Golapbag.
Beyond town, Kalna, about 60 km away, has the circular Naba Kailash complex and fine terracotta temples. Bardhaman is flat, relatively easy for older travellers and well connected: Barddhaman Junction is on the Howrah–Delhi main line, with local trains from Howrah taking around two hours. It is a practical stop for families, with limited luxury but plenty of heritage.
