The short answer

Rani Bhatiyani Temple, Jasol: what visitors should know first

Go if you want to see a living regional shrine and are already travelling the Balotra road. It is a long way from Barmer city and busiest on Trayodashi and Navratri, so pick your day with care.

History and context

The story behind Rani Bhatiyani Temple, Jasol

Jasol was the capital of the former Malani area, ruled by the Mahecha clan of the Rathore Rajputs. The Rathores of Jasol trace their line to Rawal Mallinath, whose cattle fair is held each year at nearby Tilwara.

The temple's construction date is not known from the sources, and the story of Rani Bhatiyani is local tradition.

Why it matters

Why Rani Bhatiyani Temple, Jasol is worth your time

Local tradition holds that Rani Bhatiyani was a Rajput princess from the Jaisalmer region who married into the Rathore family of Jasol, and that she is now venerated as a goddess. Accounts of her death vary, and this origin story is local legend, not documented history.

The temple matters as an example of living regional devotion in Marwar. It also sits in a village that was once the capital of the Malani area, ruled by the Mahecha Rathores, so a visit adds a small layer of local history.

How to experience it

Jasol is on the Nakoda–Balotra road, so the temple fits neatly with a visit to Nakoda. The newer temple is carved in Jaisalmer stone in Rajasthani style, with the idol of Rani Bhatiyani dressed in colourful garments and ornaments.

Devotees come all year. A four-day pilgrimage is held in April, and Navratri is also observed. Reports describe long queues and chanting on Trayodashi, so if you prefer a calm visit, avoid those days.

The village also has an old fort and cenotaphs linked to the former rulers. Ask locally before wandering. Dress modestly, take water, and approach the shrine with respect.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Avoid Trayodashi if you dislike crowds
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear
  • Carry water
  • Combine with Nakoda in one trip
