The short answer
Arsikere Sloth Bear Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Treat this as a place to know about rather than a planned stop. The sanctuary was declared recently, and no safari, fees, permit rules or visitor facilities are published. Ask the forest office in Arsikere or Hassan before making any plan, and do not expect to see a bear.
History and context
The story behind Arsikere Sloth Bear Wildlife Sanctuary
Wikipedia's Arsikere article says that in 2022 the local forest, together with adjoining forests, totalling about 100.88 sq km, was declared the Arsikere Sloth Bear Wildlife Sanctuary. A 2021 report gave the proposed area as 10,088.37 hectares, including reserve forests of Hirekallugudda, Ramenahalli and Chakanakatte in Arsikere range and two blocks from Gardangiri in Kadur range.
The Karnataka wildlife board approved the proposal in principle before notification. The exact gazette date is not stated in the sources.

Why it matters
Why Arsikere Sloth Bear Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Sloth bears live in dry forest and scrub, and their habitat is under pressure from quarrying, farmland and human settlement. Wildlife SOS, which has worked with the Karnataka Forest Department on bear research, says the new designation was supported by its work on den sites and density.
For a traveller on the Hoysala route, the sanctuary adds a different side of the region: dry rocky forest where conservation is still being established. Because visitor access is not formalised, the most useful thing a visitor can do is respect restrictions and not push for sightings.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Start with a phone call or visit to the forest office in Arsikere or Hassan. The sanctuary was declared in 2022 by combining the Arsikere-range reserve forests with adjoining blocks, and no tourism programme is described in the sources available. Do not turn up and enter the forest on your own.
If the office permits a visit, expect a guided approach on foot or by vehicle, and treat it as habitat viewing rather than an animal show. Sloth bears are shy, mainly nocturnal and use rocky outcrops and dens, so daytime sightings are unlikely. The landscape is dry deciduous forest on low granite hills, quite unlike the green gardens of the Hoysala temple towns.
If no visit is available, you lose little. The sanctuary is best understood as context: one of three recent sloth bear sanctuaries in Karnataka, alongside Daroji and Gudekote, and a reminder that Hassan district is more than temples. Return to Belur and Halebidu for your main sightseeing.
