The short answer
Skandagiri (Kalavara Durga) Trek: what visitors should know first
Go if you are fit for a steep, rocky climb of about 3 km, and book a slot on Aranya Vihaara in advance. The early slot starts in the dark for the sunrise. Older parents who want the same view without the climb are better at Nandi Hills, which has a road to the top.

Why it matters
Why Skandagiri (Kalavara Durga) Trek is worth your time
Skandagiri is one of the closest real hill treks to Bengaluru, and the sunrise above the clouds has made it a city favourite. That popularity is why the Forest Department now runs it only through online booking, with fixed slots and caps.
The fort ruins on top, believed to date from Tipu Sultan's time, show why the hill mattered: it overlooks the roads and plains north of Bengaluru. Booking properly, staying on the path and taking litter back help keep the trek open.

How to experience it
The trek starts behind the Papagni Mutt in Kalavara village, about 3 km from Chikkaballapur off the Bengaluru–Hyderabad highway. Book the 4 am slot for the sunrise, or the 8 am slot for a daylight walk. Report at the start point a little before your slot, with the ID used to book.
The trail is about 3 km each way through scrub forest and over rock, climbing to about 1,450 m (4,760 ft). Most people take two to three hours to reach the top. On the summit there is a small temple, a pond and sections of fort wall, with views across to Nandi Hills and Muddenahalli.
On many winter mornings the hill sits above a layer of cloud, which is why the early slot sells out first. Carry a head torch, water and a light jacket, wear shoes with grip, and leave enough time for a careful descent once it is light.
