History and context
The story behind Our Lady of Remedies Church, Betalbatim
The Jesuits built the church in 1630 with financial help from the communidades of Betalbatim and Gonsua. It was made a parish by order of the Administrator, the Archbishop of Cochin, dated 24 April 1635, and the first Jesuit parish priest listed is Fr Antonio Luis in 1681, with Fr Bernardo Garcia in 1759 the last.
After the Jesuits were expelled, the diocese of Goa took over the parish, and the church was reconstructed in 1807. The floor was changed from stone to granite in 2004, the cemetery was enlarged in 1929 on land given by the Antao family, and parishioners funded repairs in 2016 and 2017.

Why it matters
Why Our Lady of Remedies Church, Betalbatim is worth your time
Betalbatim's Catholic life revolves around this church. The Jesuits built it in 1630 with help from the village communities of Betalbatim and Gonsua, and the parish was formally raised in 1635 by order of the Administrator, the Archbishop of Cochin. After the Jesuits were expelled, the Goa diocese took over, and the church was reconstructed in 1807.
For a visitor, it is a way to see beyond the beach: a working parish with chapels in several vaddos, an annual feast and a congregation that still fills the building on Sundays. It shows the Portuguese-era Catholic heritage that shapes much of the food, names and festivals of Salcete, and it is a gentle counterweight to a beach stay.

How to experience it
The Church of Our Lady of Remedies stands at the centre of Betalbatim village. A January 2026 article in The Goan describes a Baroque and Neo-Classical building whose façade carries domes with painted shell trims, with the patroness set in a niche below the cross. A large cross on a pedestal stands outside, surrounded by smaller crosses. Inside there are high ceilings, carved wooden furniture, stained-glass windows, a pipe organ and a wooden pulpit with images of the four evangelists.
Go in the morning and sit for a few minutes. The central altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies, with St Bartholomew and St Ignatius beside it, and the church has seven altars in all. A local travel writer recommends the early Sunday service for a feel of village life; if you attend, sit quietly at the back and follow local custom.
The church is about 2 km from the beach by one listing, so it combines easily with a taxi or scooter ride and a stop at a village café. Check Mass times locally and avoid arriving during a service unless you intend to attend.
