Why it matters
Why Kugti Pass Trek is worth your time
The pass is a reminder that the Gaddi world is built around crossing the Pir Panjal, not staying behind it. Herders have used such routes for centuries to move between Chamba and Lahaul, and the trek lets visitors follow part of that path.
For trekkers it is a clear route in a quiet valley, with the huge presence of Manimahesh Kailash nearby, though it demands real mountain experience. Even if you never reach the top, knowing the route exists changes how the quiet villages of the Budhil valley read.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat the pass as a proper expedition. The official trekking portal lists a drive of about 16 km from Bharmour to Dharol, where the walking begins. The trail follows the Budhil River towards Kugti, a Gaddi village reached after a steep ascent of two or three hours. Beyond the village the route continues to higher camps and finally the pass, listed at around 5,050 m.
On the far side the trail drops towards the Chandra-Bhaga valley in Lahaul. Gaddi shepherds have used it for generations for moving flocks, so you may meet them on the trail. A guide and arrangements for camping, food and acclimatisation are needed; this is not a route to improvise.
If you only want a taste, go as far as Kugti village. Visit the Kartikeya shrine, enjoy the views into the sanctuary and return the same day.
