Why it matters
Why Asurgarh Fort is worth your time
Asurgarh is one of Odisha's major early historic sites, with dating that sources place between the 8th-9th century BCE and the early centuries CE. Excavations found Mauryan-period material, which suggests contact with wider Indian trade and power networks.
It shows that Kalahandi's history goes back far beyond the royal house of Bhawanipatna. For a visitor, the value lies in scale and age rather than spectacle. Standing on the rampart, you can sense the size of a settlement that traded, made beads and struck or used coins long before the royal houses of western Odisha. Combined with Junagarh and the Manikeswari temple, it gives a layered view of the district across two thousand years or more.

How to experience it
Asurgarh is a large rectangular fortified settlement with a wide moat on three sides and four gates in its wall. What you see are earthen ramparts and low mounds, so a guide or local help makes the visit much more rewarding.
Start at one of the gates and walk along the rampart to appreciate the scale. The Sandol river runs near the western rampart, and a reservoir called Asursagar lies close to the site. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India uncovered pottery, coins and other finds, and sources link the settlement to early historic Odisha.
Carry water, wear a hat and visit in the cooler months. Combine the trip with a drive to Junagarh or the Narla area.
