History and context
The story behind Bhojeshwar Temple, Bhojpur
The temple is traditionally attributed to the Paramara king Bhoja. Archaeologist Kirit Mankodi dates its construction to the later part of his reign, around the mid-11th century. Construction stopped abruptly for reasons that are unknown; historians suggest a natural disaster, lack of resources or war.
The Archaeological Survey of India took over conservation in 1951, and the roofless temple was restored in 2006–07. It is a Monument of National Importance.

Why it matters
Why Bhojeshwar Temple, Bhojpur is worth your time
Bhojeshwar is one of the most unusual temples in central India: a large 11th-century Shiva shrine that was never finished. The lingam is among the largest in India and the whole structure gives a rare look at how a major temple was built.
It is also a living place of worship. Thousands of devotees visit at Mahashivratri, and the state holds the annual Bhojpur Utsav cultural event around that time, so it is both a heritage monument and part of local devotional life.

How to experience it
The temple stands on a raised platform above Bhojpur village, and the first impression is size. Walk around the outside before entering to see the huge stone blocks, the unfinished walls and the wide platform. The roof was missing until restoration in 2006–07, and the unfinished state is the point of the visit.
Inside, the Shiva lingam is about 7.5 feet (2.3 m) high and built from three stacked limestone blocks, set on a large platform. It dominates the sanctum. Pilgrims still come for worship, so keep voices low and follow the people around you on how to approach.
Look for the carved details on the surviving walls and the ramp that builders are believed to have used to raise the blocks. Then step back to see the whole structure against the surrounding landscape before returning to the road.
