Why it matters
Why Kainchi Dham is worth your time
Kainchi Dham is closely tied to the saint Neem Karoli Baba, who made it his main ashram in his later years. The Hanuman temple was consecrated on 15 June 1964, and the annual fair on that date marks the foundation day.
For many visitors from India and abroad it is the main reason to come to this part of Kumaon. The visit is quiet and personal rather than scenic. Reaching it from Bhimtal adds a half day to a trip but gives a sense of the area's devotional life.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan the visit around the crowds. Weekday mornings are calm, while weekends and especially 15 June, the foundation day fair, are very busy. Take a taxi from Bhimtal via Bhowali, which takes under an hour in good conditions.
Inside, the ashram sits beside a stream with a Hanuman temple at its centre. Remove shoes, cover shoulders and follow the queue. Visitors usually spend a short time in the temple and then sit quietly in the courtyard.
Because rules change, ask at the entrance about photography and food. Carry little, avoid peak hours and keep your expectations calm. It is best combined with Bhowali or a Nainital stop rather than a long day trip on its own.
