The short answer
Nahar Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Only if you specifically want blackbuck country and are happy with a long drive and almost no facilities. For a casual family trip, Bhindawas and Sultanpur are easier. Confirm access and any permit with the forest department before setting out.
History and context
The story behind Nahar Wildlife Sanctuary
The land was formerly pasture belonging to the Nawab of Dujana and was managed as a Reserve Forest before the Haryana Forest Department notified it as a wildlife sanctuary on 30 January 1987. It is named after Nahar village. A small protection centre was built in 2012-13 inside the sanctuary.

Why it matters
Why Nahar Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Natural grassland is among the most threatened habitats in northern India, and Nahar is described by the Haryana Forest Department as one of the last surviving natural habitats for blackbuck in the state. It is a small place, but protecting it keeps a species alive in a region that has lost most of its open scrub and pasture.
For travellers, it is an honest, low-key glimpse of what rural Haryana looked like before intensive farming. Do not expect a developed park; expect open ground, a forest gate and the chance, not the guarantee, of seeing antelope.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Blackbuck country
The open grassland is rare habitat for blackbuck in Haryana, and the sanctuary exists mainly to protect it.
- 02
Protection centre
A fenced centre of about 25 acres, built in 2012-13, has held blackbuck, including rescued animals.
- 03
A different Haryana
The sanctuary shows open pasture and scrub, a contrast with the surrounding irrigated farmland.

How to experience it
Nahar is a day trip, not a stop on the way. It lies near Kosli on the Kosli-Mahendragarh road, and the forest department describes it as around 40 km from Rewari and about 100 km from Delhi via Jhajjar. From Bhindawas, plan on a long rural drive, so leave early and carry water and food.
The sanctuary is former pasture land of the Nawab of Dujana and protects about 522 acres in three parcels, split by the Kosli-Kanina road. The main interest is blackbuck, an antelope that needs open grassland and is now scarce in Haryana. A protection centre, built in 2012-13 on about 25 acres, has housed blackbuck, but wild sightings cannot be promised.
There is a park gate and a forest guard house, but little else. Go in the cooler months, ask the staff where animals are likely to be, and do not approach or feed them. Binoculars are essential. Consider combining this with a Rewari or Rohtak overnight rather than a same-day return to Delhi.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Check access with the forest department first
- Leave early; the drive is long
- Carry all food and water
- Stay in the vehicle or on paths and keep your distance from animals
- Use Rewari or Kosli for fuel and meals
