Why it matters
Why Dangmal Forest Rest House and Nature Camp is worth your time
Staying inside the park changes the pace of the trip. Day visitors spend most of their hours on a boat moving to and from the jetty. Overnight guests reach the creeks while the light is soft, can visit the interpretation centre without a rush, and have time to sit with the sounds of the forest.
For older travellers the trade-off is plain: this is a basic, remote stay in exchange for a quiet, low-impact experience. The camp accommodation is run by the state, which also means fees fund the protected area. If you cannot manage the boat transfers and basic facilities, a night in a comfortable town nearby, combined with a day safari, is a better plan.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Dawn in the mangroves
The hour after sunrise is the quietest and richest for birds, and you wake up already inside the park.
- 02
No rush to the jetty
You can do the visitor centre and a creek ride on separate occasions instead of one long day.
- 03
Forest evenings
Without city light, the sounds of the mangroves after dark are a strong part of the stay.

How to experience it
This is a forest department camp, not a resort. Reservations go through the Mangrove Forest Division at Rajnagar or the Odisha eco-tourism portal, and a published guide lists a forest rest house tariff at Dangmal in the range of roughly one to two thousand rupees. Treat that as a rough guide only and check the current rate and what is included. Meals are usually part of the package.
Getting there is the first part of the stay. You collect your permit at Khola or Gupti, hire a registered boat and travel through the creeks to Dangmal. Carry what you need; there are no shops around the camp, mobile signal is patchy and the power supply depends on the camp's arrangements.
The real reason to stay is the hours the day visitors miss. At dawn the creeks and compound are quiet and birds are active, and at dusk you can hear the forest wake up. Walk gently around the compound, keep to the paths and do not go near the water's edge after dark.
Plan with confidence
Before you book the room.
- Book through the forest office or the official portal as early as possible
- Carry water, snacks, medicines, a torch and mosquito repellent
- Confirm meals, bedding and bathroom type when you reserve
- Do not walk near the water at night
- Check what happens if the tide or weather delays your boat
