Before you go

Bhitarkanika with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan at least one night near the park. A single day from Bhubaneswar means about seven to eight hours on the road and is very tiring.
  • Boats are low and open. Ask the boatman to help with boarding, keep the life jacket on and carry a hat, water and sun protection; there is little shade on the water.
  • Jetties are muddy and uneven. Wear closed shoes with grip and move slowly at landings.
  • Facilities inside the park are basic. Carry medicines, snacks and a torch, and check bedding and bathroom arrangements before you book a forest rest house.
  • The park is closed 1 May to 31 July. Plan for November to February, when the weather is mild and the creeks are comfortable.
  • Skip Ekakula and long beach journeys unless you are comfortable on boats for several hours; Dangmal and the Khola creeks are the gentler choices.

Easiest first

Places in Bhitarkanika sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (8)

  • Bagagahana Heronry (Places to visit · Half a day by boat from the nearest jetty) — The visit is by boat with no walking to speak of. The monsoon months mean rain, humidity and slippery jetties, so choose a covered boat if possible and bring rain protection.
  • Baladevjew Temple, Kendrapara (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1 hour) — The visit is mostly level, but you will remove footwear and the ground can be hot or wet. Crowds at festival times are heavy, so older travellers should avoid the Rath Yatra days.
  • Bhitarkanika Mangrove Boat Safari (Places to visit · 4 to 5 hours for a standard creek ride; a full day if you add Dangmal) — There is almost no walking, but boarding a low wooden boat from a muddy jetty needs a steady step, and there is little back support or shade. Wear the life jacket provided, carry a hat and water, and let the boatman help you on and off.
  • Chandabali River Town (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours, plus boat time if you travel on from here) — The town is flat but busy, and the riverbank can be muddy. There are few places to sit, so do not plan a long visit.
  • Dangmal Crocodile Visitor Centre (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours at the centre; more if you stay overnight) — Paths around the centre are short and mostly flat, but the jetty landing can be muddy and uneven and shade is patchy. Take the boatman's arm on the landing and avoid walking in the middle of the day.
  • Kanika Palace, Rajkanika (Places to visit · About an hour) — Expect some steps and uneven ground at an old building. We could not verify lifts, seating or toilets, so ask before taking elderly relatives.
  • Kendrapara Rasabali (Food and restaurants · 20 to 30 minutes) — Shops are small and often crowded, with limited seating. It is a quick stop, but the sweet is rich and may not suit those with diabetes or dairy restrictions.
  • Khola and Gupti Entry Points (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes for permit and boat arrangements) — Jetties are muddy and uneven, and there is limited seating. Allow time at the counter, and ask the boatman to help you on and off the boat.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Ekakula Beach (Places to visit · A full day, usually with an overnight) — The journey takes several hours in a small boat, and landing is by a makeshift jetty or on sand. This is demanding for those with limited mobility or back problems. Facilities are very basic.
  • Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary (Places to visit · Not applicable as a stand-alone visit; ask the forest office) — There is no public visitor site. Where permission is granted, access is by boat and sand, with no seating, no shade and very basic facilities, so it is unsuited to anyone with mobility problems.
  • Habalikhati Island and Nature Camp (Places to visit · A full day, or an overnight stay) — The trip involves a long boat ride and a landing on sand and mud. Facilities are basic. Older travellers who can manage boats comfortably will enjoy it, but should carry water and plan rest breaks.

Practical tips for Bhitarkanika

  • Seasonal closure. The park is reported closed to visitors from 1 May to 31 July for crocodile nesting, and there may be a short closure in January for the census. Confirm dates before you book.
  • Permits and boats. Collect your entry permit at the Khola or Gupti counter and hire a registered boat with a guide. Check current fees with the forest office.
  • Tide matters. Crocodiles are most visible at low tide when mudbanks are exposed. Ask your boatman about tide timings and plan the ride for the early afternoon.
  • Heat and sun. April and May are very hot and humid, and boats have little shade. Carry a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, even in winter.
  • Getting around. There are no roads inside the park. Hire a car and driver for the transfer from Bhubaneswar or Bhadrak and use boats inside the park.
  • Money and supplies. Cash and card facilities are limited near the jetties. Carry cash, snacks, medicines and a torch before you leave the main road.
  • Dress and footwear. Wear light cotton, long sleeves for sun and mosquitoes, and closed shoes with grip for muddy jetties.
  • Photography. Bring a zoom lens and binoculars. Entry rules may include camera fees, and drones are generally not permitted in protected areas, so ask the forest office.
