Plan 01
1 day in Bhubaneswar
- 01
Day 1: Temples and lake
Start at the Lingaraj Temple early, before the main crowds; allow an hour for the main sanctum and courtyards, and note that non-Hindu visitors cannot enter the inner sanctum but can see the temple complex from the courtyard. Walk or drive to the nearby Rajarani Temple to see its intricately carved exterior, then stop at Bindu Sagar Lake for a quiet rest and to watch birds. Have lunch in the old city, then visit the Odisha State Museum for sculpture, textiles and tribal art. In the evening, visit Brahmeswara Temple or Ananta Vasudeva Temple, both within the old city, as the light softens. End with a local dinner of rice, lentils and fish curry.

Day 1: Central temples and city museums
Begin at Lingaraj Temple at opening time, then walk to Rajarani Temple, Brahmeswara Temple and Ananta Vasudeva Temple if energy allows; these are within walking distance or a short drive of each other. Rest and have lunch in the old city or at a restaurant near Bindu Sagar Lake. Spend the afternoon at the Odisha State Museum, which houses exceptional sculpture collections and textiles. In the evening, visit Keshab Dev Temple or walk around Bindu Sagar Lake at dusk.

Day 2: Caves and monuments
Drive out to Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves (roughly 10 km away), which contain carved rock chambers from the 2nd century BC. The caves involve climbing but reward you with views of the surrounding plateau and fields. On the way back, stop at Dhauli to see the Ashoka Rock Edict and the nearby Shanti Stupa. Return to Bhubaneswar in the late afternoon and visit Nandankanan Zoo if visiting with children, or simply rest and explore the Bhubaneswar Bazaar for local crafts.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Visit temples at opening time when courtyards are less crowded and the day is cooler. Lingaraj Temple in early morning is best.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Afternoons are very hot and humid from March to September; stay indoors during these hours if possible.
- The old city temples have uneven stone floors and occasional steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry a stick if mobility is a concern. Brahmeswara and Ananta Vasudeva temples are more level than Lingaraj.
- The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves involve climbing and uneven paths. If in doubt about mobility, skip these and instead visit Dhauli (a shorter, easier site with views) or explore the museums.
- Hire a car and driver for the full day to avoid long walks between temples and to have a cool place to rest. Autos and shared taxis can be unpredictable.
- Choose a hotel with a lift, good air-conditioning, and easy access for your car. Satya Nagar and Nayapalli areas are easier for seniors than the narrow lanes of the old city.
