Why it matters
Why Rajgundha Valley is worth your time
Rajgundha is the kind of place that makes Bir Billing more than a flying site. It sits in Chota Bhangal, a high valley that lies beyond Billing, and has no direct motorable road to the hamlet, which has kept it quiet. District information puts it at about 2,700 to 2,770 m.
It works as a contrast to the Tibetan Colony and the landing fields: hill pastures, forest and a traditional village rather than monasteries and cafés. Treat it as a serious mountain outing, with weather, road conditions and your own fitness deciding whether to go, rather than a casual drive.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Decide first whether you want to drive or trek. By vehicle, the route goes up past Billing towards Bandla and Gunehar and ends on a rough, partly off-road stretch that needs a sturdy vehicle and an experienced driver. By foot, the trek from Billing is described as 12 to 14 km and about 5 to 6 hours, moderate to hard. Most day visitors combine a drive with a short final walk.
The valley sits at roughly 2,700 to 2,770 m among deodar and pine forest and meadows, with the Uhl river below and the Dhauladhar peaks above. It has little tourist infrastructure, so carry food, water and warm layers. Start early to be back before dark, and do not go if rain or snow is forecast.
If you are travelling with older relatives, a quieter alternative is to stay on the Billing meadow, where the view is similar though less secluded. For fitter groups, Rajgundha rewards the effort with a village that has no direct motor road to the hamlet itself.
