Bishnupur was the capital of the Malla kings of Mallabhum, a Vaishnava dynasty that ruled this part of western Bengal for many centuries. Most of what you see today comes from the 17th and 18th centuries, when the court built brick and laterite temples and covered the finest of them in carved terracotta panels. The temples are on UNESCO's Tentative List, and several are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The town is compact and the main monuments sit within a short rickshaw ride of each other. Rasmancha, Shyam Rai and Jor Bangla form the usual first morning. Madan Mohan, Lalji, Jor Mandir and the Dalmadal cannon fill a second. Between sights there is more to see: the Baluchari silk saris still woven here, terracotta horses in the shops, and the Bishnupur gharana, a vocal tradition rooted in dhrupad.
It is an easy place for older travellers if you plan around the weather. Walking is mostly level and distances are short, but shade is limited and the monsoon months from June to September are wet and humid. Allow two days, travel in November to February, and treat it as a gentle, unhurried stop, ideally combined with other places in Bankura district or a longer West Bengal route.
