Day 1: Mahabodhi Temple and Bodhi Tree, morning and evening
Arrive early, take a walk around the Mahabodhi Temple exterior and observe the main tower and carved details. Enter the temple (remove shoes, cover shoulders), walk into the sanctum if you are able to climb the steep internal stairs, and then spend time in the courtyard. Walk to the sacred Bodhi Tree just south of the temple and sit quietly. Have lunch at a local restaurant or your guesthouse. In the late afternoon, visit one of the nearby monasteries—the Thai Monastery or Japanese Monastery are accessible on foot—and watch the sunset from the temple grounds or a nearby vantage point. Evening return for any quiet prayer or reflection in the temple courtyard.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- The Mahabodhi Temple and courtyard are mostly level. The steps inside the sanctum are steep; you can enjoy the courtyard and outer areas without climbing them.
- Visit the temple and main sites at dawn or mid-morning before the heat builds and crowds increase. Afternoons are quiet but hot from March to October.
- Hire a local taxi or jeep for your stay rather than walking long distances, especially in summer months. The town is small enough that a vehicle makes trips to outlying monasteries easy.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water, a hat and sunscreen. The temple courtyard has shaded areas, but much of the walking is in open sun.
- If you have mobility concerns, inform your guesthouse or the temple office; they can often arrange quiet seating areas or special access.
- Eat at your guesthouse or well-known restaurants. The food is mostly simple and mild. Bring any personal medications and note the nearest clinic (near the main market).
