Why it matters
Why Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Eaglenest is internationally known to birdwatchers and it sits next to Sessa Orchid Sanctuary, making a large contiguous protected area. It gives Bomdila a nature side beyond monasteries. Its range of habitats, from low forest to high ridges, supports a large variety of birds, and the discovery of the Bugun liocichla showed that new species could still be found in the Eastern Himalaya. For birders it is a pilgrimage in its own right. For general travellers it is a reminder that West Kameng has a natural heritage well beyond its monasteries and roads, and that exploring it properly takes time, a guide and patience.

How to experience it
Eaglenest is a destination for birders, and is best handled with a specialist guide. The sanctuary covers 218 sq km and rises from 500 to 3,250 m. An unpaved road runs from the base to Eaglenest Pass at 2,800 m.
The Bugun liocichla, a bird first found here in 1995 and described again in 2006, is the best-known species. Expect narrow tracks and rough surfaces, so allow time and carry food, water and warm clothing.
The Bhalukpong-Bomdila highway forms the sanctuary's eastern boundary, so it can be reached from the Bomdila side. Confirm current access and arrangements before you set off.
