Before you go
Bongaon with elderly parents: what to know
- Treat Bongaon as a day trip from Kolkata. Hotels in town are basic and the better-equipped hospitals are in Kolkata.
- Hire a car for the day. Sights are scattered across rural roads, and public transport thins out in the afternoon.
- Go between November and February. Summer heat and monsoon mud make the sanctuary and village lanes tiring.
- Carry water, snacks, medicines and cash. Village stalls are few and toilets at some sights are basic.
- Check Petrapole ceremony timings before you go and carry photo ID, as the border area is closely watched.
- Start early and plan to be back on the main road to Kolkata before dark.

Practical tips for Bongaon
- Getting there. Suburban trains from Sealdah take roughly two hours to Bangaon Junction, but a car is more comfortable and lets you reach the sanctuary and villages. Check the current train timetable before relying on it.
- Getting around. Autos and e-rickshaws serve the town. For the sanctuary, Thakurnagar and Barakpur, hire a car for the day and agree the route and waiting time in advance.
- Heat and humidity. March to May is hot and sticky. Even in winter, midday sun on open ground can tire older visitors, so schedule sights for morning and late afternoon.
- Monsoon. June to September brings heavy rain and muddy village roads. The sanctuary is best avoided in this period.
- Money. Carry cash for entry fees, village shops and tips. ATMs are available in Bongaon town but not at the sights.
- Border rules. Petrapole is a sensitive international crossing. Carry photo ID, follow instructions from BSF staff and do not photograph restricted areas.
- Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly at temples and the Matua complex, remove footwear where asked and ask before photographing worshippers.
- Facilities. Toilets, food and medical help are limited outside town. Carry water, snacks and any medicines you need.
