The short answer
Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Go if you want a wildlife day away from the forts and are comfortable with a long, bumpy jeep ride. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed; book through the forest department or a local operator and confirm which zones are open.
History and context
The story behind Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary
The area was notified as the Ramgarh sanctuary in 1982 and was later merged with part of the National Gharial Sanctuary and territorial forest of the Bundi and Bhilwara divisions to form the present reserve. It was declared Rajasthan's fourth tiger reserve in 2022.
A tiger from Sariska that had wandered into Haryana was later relocated here, and by December 2024 the reserve was reported to hold four adult tigers and three cubs. Jungle safaris for tourists were first flagged off in June 2023.

Why it matters
Why Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Ramgarh Vishdhari matters because it is one of Rajasthan's newer tiger reserves and part of a larger effort to link tiger habitat. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1982 and a tiger reserve in 2022, covering roughly 1,500 sq km across Bundi, Bhilwara and Kota districts, and it forms a corridor between Ranthambore National Park and the Mukundara Hills reserve.
For travellers it offers a quieter alternative to Ranthambore. The reserve is still being developed for visitors, so there are fewer vehicles and fewer facilities, and the experience is closer to ordinary forest than to a managed safari circuit. That suits patient visitors who value landscape and birds, but it also means that information, zones and fees can change; treat published details as provisional and check before you commit a day to the drive.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
A newer tiger reserve
The reserve links Ranthambore and Mukundara Hills, and its tigers are still few, so sightings are a bonus rather than a promise.
- 02
Deer, birds and hill forest
Expect sambar, chital and nilgai on forest tracks, with birds including peafowl and raptors, and the Mej river running through the landscape.
- 03
Few other jeeps
With safaris only begun in 2023, the tracks are usually less crowded than at the better-known Rajasthan parks.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan this as a dedicated wildlife day. Arrange the safari in advance through the forest department or a reputable local operator, leave Bundi early, and allow for slow roads. The reserve sits near Ramgarh village on the Bundi-Nainwa road, in the Dalelpura area where the first tourist safari was flagged off in 2023. Ask on the day which zone you will enter, as access has been phased in since the sanctuary became a tiger reserve.
Once on the track, go in with realistic expectations. The forest is dry deciduous woodland and rocky hills, cut by the Mej river, and the animals most visitors see are sambar, chital, wild boar and nilgai, with birds and the occasional leopard or sloth bear. Tigers have been relocated here and a small population is reported, but they are elusive.
Carry water, a hat and a warm layer for the early morning, since the jeep is open. Keep voices low, follow the guide and the forest staff, and do not leave the vehicle. Combine the trip with a late lunch back in Bundi and rest in the afternoon.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Book the safari through the forest department or a licensed operator
- Confirm which zone, timing and fee apply before you leave
- Start early and carry water, snacks and a warm layer
- Do not expect shops or restaurants near the entrance
- Keep hotel plans flexible in case a safari is cancelled

- Tickets and access
- Safaris began in June 2023 and were reported then at Rs 780 per Indian adult, Rs 1,150 for foreigners and Rs 700 for students. Fees, zones, timings and the booking process change, so confirm all of these with the Rajasthan forest department or a licensed operator. The reserve has no visitor facilities to rely on.
