How to reach Burhanpur by air

There is no commercial airport in Burhanpur. Indore (IDR) is about 190 km away and Nagpur (NAG) about 360 km. Jalgaon has a small domestic airport; check current scheduled flights before relying on it.

How to reach Burhanpur by train

Burhanpur station (BAU) lies in Lalbagh on the Jabalpur–Bhusaval section of Central Railway. Several long-distance express trains stop here, and autos are available outside the station.

How to reach Burhanpur by road

Burhanpur is on the Maharashtra border, about 340 km south-west of Bhopal and about 510 km north-east of Mumbai. Asirgarh Fort is about 20 km away on the highway towards Khandwa and Indore.

Getting around Burhanpur

Autos and hired cars are the usual way to get around. A car with a driver is the easiest option for Asirgarh, Ahukhana, the Chhatri and the dargah, which are spread out.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Burhanpur

  • Do Asirgarh Fort early and ask your driver to go as far up as the road allows. The final stretch and the ruins involve uneven ground and steps.
  • The Jama Masjid, Shahi Qila and Tomb of Shah Nawaz Khan are broadly level but have steps at entrances and rough paving. Wear flat, closed shoes you can remove easily at religious sites.
  • Skip Ahukhana and the Chhatri in or after rain; access roads can turn unpaved and muddy.
  • Carry water and any regular medicines. Pharmacies are easy to find in the centre, but there is no tourist infrastructure at the outlying sites.
  • Hire a local guide or driver who knows the lanes; signage is weak and the sites are spread out.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
