History and context
The story behind Fort Aguada
Fort Aguada was built in 1612 by the Portuguese to guard against the Dutch and protect the Bardez sub-district, at the mouth of the Mandovi River. A spring inside the fort supplied passing ships with fresh water. An 1864 lighthouse stands on a hill west of the fort, one of the oldest in Asia, and a newer lighthouse replaced it in 1976. The old Aguada Central Jail within the complex was converted into a Freedom Struggle Museum in December 2021.

Why it matters
Why Fort Aguada is worth your time
Fort Aguada was built by the Portuguese in 1612 to guard against the Dutch and to protect shipping and Bardez. The freshwater spring that gave ships a safe place to refill is the source of the name.
It is a protected monument of national importance and the clearest historical anchor near the Calangute stretch: a reminder of why this coast mattered to trading powers, and a very different experience from the beach. The lighthouse, built in 1864 and later replaced in 1976, adds a maritime layer to the story.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan around the light. Fort Aguada faces west over the Arabian Sea, so late afternoon gives cooler air and good views. A taxi from Calangute takes roughly 20 minutes in normal traffic, per a travel guide.
The upper fort has ramparts, a lighthouse built in 1864 and a spring that supplied ships with fresh water, which is where the name Aguada comes from. Part of the complex was a prison, now a Freedom Struggle Museum opened in December 2021, while the Taj hotel occupies another part of the site.
Allow an hour. Wear walking shoes, bring water and a hat, and take the ramps and lower terrace slowly. Combine with Candolim or a dinner in Calangute afterwards.
