The short answer

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Worth it for early-morning walkers and birdwatchers who are comfortable with hill trails. Wildlife is shy and sightings are not guaranteed, so treat it as a pleasant forest walk and anything you see as a bonus.

History and context

The story behind Chail Wildlife Sanctuary

Wikipedia records that the sanctuary was notified on 21 March 1976 and covers about 10,854 hectares, though its infobox and body text disagree on the area. Species listed include ghoral, kakkar, sambar, leopard, black bear and several pheasants.

Why it matters

Why Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

The sanctuary shows how much of Chail's character comes from its forests. Without it, the hill station would be another strip of hotels. It protects mixed forest and a habitat for species such as ghoral, sambar and pheasants, including a cheer pheasant breeding and rehabilitation programme started in 1988.

For visitors, it supplies the main reason to walk. Forest paths, birdsong and the chance of sighting a deer make Chail feel more rural than most hill stations near Shimla.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan an early start. Forest officials quoted in Outlook Traveller suggest being in position by around 5 am along the Kali ka Tibba and Gaura routes, or between the palace and Janerghat, when the animals are most active. Wear dull colours, keep voices down and carry binoculars if you have them.

The sanctuary protects ghoral, kakkar (barking deer), sambar, langur, leopards and Himalayan black bear, and birds including kalij and cheer pheasants. Realistically you will see langurs and birds on a walk, and deer if you are lucky. Leopards and bears are present, so avoid walking alone at dawn or dusk and do not leave marked paths.

If you want a gentler visit, drive up the Kali ka Tibba road and stop at pull-offs to scan the forest. The ride combines naturally with the temple and a late breakfast in town.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start at first light for the best chance of wildlife
  • Wear muted colours and carry binoculars
  • Do not walk alone at dawn or dusk; leopards and bears live here
  • Check fees and permissions with the forest office or hotel
